About Us

Kuifkopvisvanger: A Haven for Bird and Nature Enthusiasts

Kuifkopvisvanger is deeply inspired by a love for birds, a passion that is reflected in both its name and its tranquil setting in Velddrif. The farm is named after the Malachite Kingfisher, known in Afrikaans as “Kuifkopvisvanger.” The inspiration for the name came one morning during the early stages of establishing the business when, over a cup of coffee, a Malachite Kingfisher perched on a water tank just outside the window. Captivated by its presence, the name Kuifkopvisvanger was born.

Just as the farm received its unique name, so too did its cottages, rooms, and caravan. During each renovation, a particular bird seemed to make its presence known, ensuring its habitat remained undisturbed. Every cottage has its own story, with more to be shared upon visiting.

180+ Bird Species

Over the years, an impressive 180 different bird species have been identified on the farm and in the surrounding marshlands. Birdwatchers may even be lucky enough to spot rare species such as the Wilson’s Phalarope, occasionally seen at the Saltpans. Nature lovers can also enjoy a guided tour with Jan, exploring the Saltpans and learning about the fascinating salt production process. A camera is a must-have, as the scenery provides endless opportunities for picture-perfect moments.

Fishing Paradise

Kuifkopvisvanger is situated along the serene banks of the Berg River, making it an ideal destination for fishing enthusiasts. The river is home to Kabeljou, Steenbras, and Elf—perfect for a delicious fish braai. For those who prefer alternative activities, a peaceful canoe ride, a scenic stroll along the riverfront, or an adventurous bicycle ride across the farm are all excellent options.

An Ideal Getaway Destination

Here, tranquillity reigns supreme. The only sounds to be heard are those of nature, with the call of the Fish Eagle providing a soothing soundtrack to a truly relaxing escape. Whether visiting for a day or planning a longer stay, Kuifkopvisvanger offers the perfect retreat to unwind and recharge.
